What is mastic gum? Mastic gum (Pistacia lentiscus) is a unique resin that comes from a tree grown in the Mediterranean. For centuries, the resin has been used to improve digestion, oral health, and liver health. It contains antioxidants that are said to support its therapeutic properties.

Protecting dental health

One 2007 study found that chewing mastic gum may help prevent cavities. After 15 minutes, people who chewed mastic gum had lower levels of certain bacteria in their mouths. The bacteria levels were even lower after 135 minutes. A placebo did not provide the same results.

Mastic gum (Pistacia lentiscus) is a resin native to the Mediterranean region obtained from the mastic tree. Also known as tears of Chios, mastic gum is produced in ''tears'' or droplets traditionally on the island of Chios, Greece. Historically used to freshen breath, its pine-like flavor was also used as flavoring.
